Shady Management

The actions of the property management of University Club Apartments, located at 4707 Third Street, Detroit, MI 48201-3722, sponsored a liability to the company, my roommates and me. As management did not verify the presence of the signature of one roommate on the lease, now removed, before issuing keys, management is partly responsible for subsequent events. In summary, management gave the following two options to two of the three remaining roommates, including myself, electing to terminate the lease. The first incorporated the agreement of the roommate not requesting the termination to take full responsibility for the unit, including the search for potential roommates. The two roommates requesting the termination, upon agreement of the remaining roommate, were provided the opportunity to sign another twelve month lease and pay a nonrefundable transfer fee. The other option, in which we were arguably forced into, was to remain on the lease. As management never accepted responsibility for their actions and involvement, the choices are unacceptable. It was then made clear to management that two of the three roommates, unable to terminate the lease, moved out by early March 2009. Aside from paying four months of double rent, I may lose my portion of the security deposit due to damages to the unit by the remaining roommate. In addition, the roommate who also left in March may lose an appropriate portion of the security deposit.
The paragraph above illustrates the actions of management at University Club Apartments. However, the paragraph does not include the actions of the roommates for or against the other roommates.

Sensitive Stomach?

My boyfriend has recently brought up a major issue many of us neglect while at the super market in regards to food, even the fabled healthy choices. Between meat loaded with hormones and antibiotics and processed corn, its no wonder I frequently find myself tired or sick after a meal.

Detroit's 'lil Slice of Paris

Le Petit Zinc, Cortown's French cafe and creperie, provides Detroit with a hint of Parisian culture. Tucked away on 1055 Trumbull Street, down the street from the old Tiger Stadium, you forget you're in Detroit, enjoying French cuisine in a tiny courtyard. Additionally, the business uses bread from Avalon in a variety of menu choices. On the way to the riverfront on warmer days, check it out!

Humorous Advertising

I had to laugh after glancing at one of the many advertisements posted by Facebook: "Most popular on Twitter: Ashtun Kutcher is now the most popular person on Twitter."

Detroit's Parking Revenue

Detroit's Parking Enforcement is notorious for writing parking tickets minutes after a meter expires. My boyfriend narrowly dodged a ticket recently, following my wise advice to put in another quarter while out to lunch at Jacoby's in downtown Detroit.

Most Detroiters or commuters grumble about the staggering revenues parking enforcement provides the city. After investigating, my eyes grew wide: Municipal Parking accounted for over 45 million dollars in total revenues in 2007-2008.

Insider Perspective: Going Organic on Earth Day

Closer to Wayne State University than that of Eastern Market, Goodwells Natural Foods offers a selection of organic foods and produce. Located on 418 W. Willis Street just west of Cass, the market is situated just south of University Towers on WSU's campus.

Additionally, Avalon International Breads, located next door (422 W. Willis Street), provides Midtown with a global flare. Just another example of Detroit's hidden treasures!

MSU's Random Art

On a personal note...

As a less serious aside, I'll share a story that screams Detroit. As I headed back to my apartment via cab from downtown Detroit yesterday, I witnessed a strange exchange between my cab driver and another (from a different taxi service). The other cab pulled up and stopped in front of my cab. Both drivers got out of the their respectable cabs, had an angry verbal exchange, and the other cab driver pulled away. My cab driver angrily shared the event over his cell with someone on the other line, grumbling about being relieved he did not have a gun. Needless to say, I found myself laughing in the back of the cab.

Is privatization the answer?

As one of my first blog posts, I'm including an excerpt from a paper I recently wrote regarding the death of healthcare reform:

"The Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Aetna, both represented by AHIP or America's Health Insurance Plans, an organization dedicated to lobbying on behalf of health insurers, reported staggering increases in revenue associated with premiums and fees (America's Health Insurance Plans)*. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan reported 8,686.5 million dollars in total premium and fee revenue in 2006 and 9,849 million in 2007 (5). In a single year, the insurance company accounted for a nearly thirteen percent increase in total revenue associated with premiums and fees (5). Aetna reported comparable rates of increase between 2005 and 2007 (7). In 2005, Aetna reported 16,924.7 million dollars in revenue on premiums alone (7). Furthermore, Aetna reported 19,153.5 million in 2006 and 21,500.1 million in 2007 (7). Between 2006 and 2007, the insurance company accounted for an approximately eleven percent increase in revenue based on premiums (7). Similarly, Aetna experienced a tremendous thirteen percent increase between 2005 and 2006 (7). As profits skyrocket, insurance companies benefit as the numbers of uninsured individuals and families rapidly increase and individuals with insurance face increasing premiums as healthcare costs amplify."

In summary, health insurers line their pockets as individuals lose access to coverage, driving up the cost of healthcare and premiums for the insured.
